Someone Moved My Socks

Music and Lyrics by David Casey

Another True Story:  One time I was traveling across Wyoming, by myself, to meet the rest of the band for a show.  I stayed at a motel in Casper.  When I woke up in the morning and peered down off the edge of the bed, I saw my socks lying on the floor off to the side.  And my very first thought of the day was “Someone moved my socks in the middle of the night!”  Then I thought, “Probably not.”  But I laughed at myself and then spent the next few hours in the car writing these verses and singing to myself.

Last night when I went to bed
I put my clothes on the floor
Like I done a thousand times before
But when I woke back up
Something wasn’t right
Something bad had happened in middle of the night
Someone moved my socks

Someone moved my socks
In the middle of the night
And when they put them back
They didn’t do it right  (repeat)

I remember once
My mom she said to me
You are very special
You have a good memory
You’re very good with details
That’s exactly what she said
I’ve got it written down on the inside of my head so I know that

Someone moved my socks
In the middle of the night
And when they put them back
They didn’t do it right  (repeat 4x)

Someone moved his socks
In the middle of the night
And when they put them back
They didn’t do it right  (repeat 4x)

 That’s exactly how it happened
But how could you all know
You all seem to know a lot about
The events of that horrible night
A-ha!  I think I just figured it out all by myself
Everyone here conspired to rent a bus and follow me all around
Watching and waiting for just the right moment to play
A seemingly harmless prank on me
That you all knew was so insignificant
That the insignificance of the prank itself
Would drive me crazy
As I bent my mind around and around and around
The events and details of your fiendish and sick crime
Until at last the confession of your guilt and conspiracy
Was ushered forth from your own lips
Under the disguise of a sing-a-long
That I wrote myself
In effort to trick you into betraying
The secret which you all thought would be safe from me
But alas, you have underestimated both
My tenacity and the forensic nature of the sing-a-long
And that, my criminal friends, was your big mistake
Think about it
